Socrats suggests that emotions are the "inferior" part of the soul and hence the poet is inferior for associating with them. He believes, then, that the only answer is to banish the poet. But poetry is unlikely to be eradicated by banishing the poet, just as banishing the poet will not also banish emotions themselves. What might Plato be trying to get at in the Republic book in the dialogue which leads to the poet's paradoxical banishment?
