What is the Islamic Teaching on the Existence or Non Existence of Ghosts?

In many small towns there are rumors about haunted houses. These houses are thought to be inhabited by the spirits of people who once lived there and/or died there. Some such ghosts are benign, some are going to try to hurt and scare you.

The Bible teaches that all humans go straight into God's presence in Heaven or straight into Hell, which is eternal separation from God. None are left to wander around the earth and haunt things.

What does the Q'uaran teach about this concept?
